volunteer spotlight
So much of what we do involves volunteers - in fact, we couldn't do it without them. We have some very special volunteers who care a great deal about the IWK. They help us with our Telethon, our Radiothons, mail outs and much more!

Debbie White has been volunteering for the IWK Foundation for the last two years. In addition to helping out periodically at the foundation’s office, she has also become a respected volunteer at the IWK Radiothon on C100 FM and the IWK Telethon for Children on CTV. During those events, she has had a wide variety of responsibilities including taking pledges by phone, counting change, tabulating pledges and helping people find their way around the IWK.
Debbie’s day job includes shift work, so she likes the flexibility she has to set her own volunteer schedule with the IWK Foundation. She helps out at the foundation office when she has time to spare and can pick shifts at events like Radiothon and Telethon that work best for her.
One of her favourite volunteer memories is helping the 2008 Radiothon Change Bandit patient heroes – sisters Charlie and Jamie – bring in a cart full of money to be counted. She says she will always remember their infectious giggling and excitement!
For Debbie, her reason for volunteering is simple: “The more money there is, the easier it is for the doctors, nurses and other care providers to do their jobs and help kids feel better quicker. Now that I have a new niece, it hits a little closer to home – I would never want to see her in any kind of pain and I want her to have access to the best care possible if she ever needs it.”
