Maryn Matheson, bedford, Nova Scotia
When Maryn was two and a half years old, she was diagnosed with liver cancer at the IWK Health Centre. This meant that she would require a liver transplant, and luckily her father was a match.
The transplant took place at London Children’s Hospital, just 2 weeks before Maryn’s 3rd birthday, where 25 percent of her father’s liver was used. Two weeks after the successful transplant, the family returned to the IWK and Maryn had to have blood work done every week in order to monitor her progress.
Today, Maryn is still taking anti-rejection medication and continues to be followed by the IWK GI care team. In September, Maryn will celebrate the 5 year anniversary since her transplant and her rounds of chemotherapy finished. She continues to visit the IWK for bloodwork every 2 months, has her GI follow-up twice a year and is seen by Oncology once a year.
Maryn loves to swim, taking swimming lessons and swimming outside whenever she has an opportunity. She loves to run and climb and is learning to play the guitar.
