Our goal through the Scotiabank Group Charity Challenge this year is to raise $8,000 to purchase two new SMART pumps for the IWK Health Centre. Infusion pumps are used to deliver IV medications at precise rates or in specified amounts. SMART pumps are equipped with what is called “error reduction” software that alerts the nurse or stops the pump when a pump setting is programmed outside predetermined limits. The software allows the IWK to create a drug library for each medication based on the size of the patient and the patient’s location in the health centre. These pumps are especially designed to administer what are called “high alert” drugs or those that could harm to the patient of administered incorrectly. There are many health centre care areas that are currently in need of SMART pumps including the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Hemotology/Oncology/Nephrology Inpatient Unit, and the Pediatric Medical Unit (PMU).
