In the Southwestern area of New Brunswick, in the tiny town of St. Stephen, there is a group of 12 dedicated women working diligently to raise money for the IWK Health Centre Foundation. Although they are nearly 500Km away from the hospital, the Charlotte County IWK Fundraising Committee recognizes the importance of having a world-class institute like the IWK Health Centre in the Maritimes. 

“Even in a small community like ours, the IWK has a huge presence,” says Jennifer Johnston, committee Chair. “You might not have a direct connection with the hospital, but people you know, your friends, family and neighbours, have benefitted from their services. That’s why it’s important to us to support this amazing organization.” 

With over 10,000 individuals from New Brunswick registered as outpatients of the IWK in 2011-2012, the hospital holds a special place in the hearts of those that live in St. Stephen.  Over the last 24 years, through a variety of fundraisers, this dedicated group of individuals has raised an outstanding $153,691.27 in support of the critically-ill patients at the IWK Health Centre.

The Charlotte Country IWK Fundraising Committee never seems to slow down! Throughout the year, they are busy organizing exciting events such as carnivals, dances, auctions and raffles to help with their fundraising efforts. At their largest event, their annual dinner, the committee puts together a slideshow presentation of patients who live in their community who have befitted from the care services at the IWK. 

“It really hits home when you start to realize just how many people in our community have benefitted from the IWK,” says Robin Caldwell, Secretary of the Committee. “Every year there are new faces. It’s very emotional but very uplifting knowing that these patients are getting the best care possible, and we are doing our part to help make that happen.”
