The Best, Nothing Less

Transforming Critical Care right here in the Maritimes

Together, with our community of donors, we are on a mission to raise the remaining funds required to make our Critical Care vision for the IWK Health Centre a reality. That means transforming the physical space of the IWK’s Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units (NICU and PICU), and ensuring the most advanced technology and equipment is available to care for the most critically ill and vulnerable Maritime patients.

In April, we celebrated, alongside our donors, as the first patients moved into NICU North, the first phase of our transformation plan.

Take a tour of the newly opened NICU North.

The new NICU is a game-changer. The IWK is setting a new standard of family-centred care right here in the Maritimes, and globally.

But the journey is not over. We need your help to raise the remaining $8.5M to complete this world-class redevelopment.

Where It Began

Members of the IWK NICU team travelled as far as Norway and Estonia to learn from leading health care providers. They came back with the goal of not only building better – but the best – for Maritime patients and their families. Watch the video to the right to hear Tanya Bishop, NICU Operations Manager and Clinical Lead for the redevelopment of NICU, explain where it all began and where we’re headed.

PHASE 1: NICU North

Thanks to the remarkable support of our donors, the IWK is transforming its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). On April 11, 2018, NICU North officially opened with 19 private, single-family rooms equipped with the most up-to-date equipment and technology. This new environment demonstrates what families truly need to heal and thrive in an intensive care setting.

This is phase 1 of 3 to transform Critical Care and is considered one of the largest and most complex redevelopment projects ever undertaken at the IWK.

PHASE 2: NICU South

With the completion of NICU South in the spring of 2019, the IWK will have a total of 38 single family rooms creating an environment that recognizes families and their involvement in the care of their infants. These rooms will help promote privacy, confidentiality and infection control. They will also enable NICU staff to encourage family involvement in newborn development through skin-to-skin contact, infant-parent bonding, improved infection control and breastfeeding support.

PHASE 3: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

Whether it’s a young patient recquiring open-heart surgery to those experiencing severe illness and trauma, patients cared for in PICU are the most seriously ill and require round-the-clock monitoring and care.

The redeveloped PICU will feature 10 single, private rooms so families can stay with their children day and night. These rooms will allow for better protection from infection, reduce noise exposure and increase privacy. Caregivers can expand two of the patient rooms into one large room for very critical patients requiring lifesupport technology, multi-trauma or end-of-life care.
