John is President & Co-owner of the Ocean Group of Companies, a second generation family business based in Dartmouth, N.S. The group includes Ocean Contractors Limited, Thompson’s Moving Group, Briar Transport and Briar Logistics. John is a past Chairman of the Construction Association of Nova Scotia, past President of the Nova Scotia Road Builders Association, and Board member of the Canadian Construction Association. John is also a Past President of the Nova Scotia Construction Curling Association and past board member of the Urban Development Institute of Nova Scotia.
John is currently serves as a Board of Governor at Mount Saint Vincent University. He is a board member of the Nova Scotia Chapter of the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada and is co-Chair of the Foundation’s annual “Exile Island” fundraiser. He also takes pride in being a longtime committee member of the annual “Great Big Dig” Gala fundraising event for the IWK. John has also recently joined the Board of the IWK Foundation and the Board of the Hubbards Sailing Club.
Prior to joining the family business, John spent six years as Project Superintendent and Project Manager for several major civil construction projects in British Columbia. John holds a Civil Engineering degree from Dalhousie University and subsequently completed the renowned Executive Program at Queens University. He is a registered Professional Engineer with Engineers Nova Scotia and is an active member of TEC Canada.
John and his wife, Karen, reside in Halifax and have 3 children; Grace (17), Jack (15), and Owen (12).
