Halifax, NS – The Atlantic Canadian construction community came together for the IWK on Saturday, raising $360,000 at the Kent Great Big Dig for the IWK
“The Kent Great Big Dig is the premier fundraising event by the Atlantic Canadian construction industry and we are proud to support the IWK,” says John Wills three-time Event Chair. This weekend, Wills, from Marco Group, passed the torch to incoming Chair, John Flemming of Ocean Contractors. During his tenure, Wills’ connection to the IWK became closer than it had ever been before. “One year after becoming Chair, my youngest daughter was diagnosed with leukemia,” says Wills. “As a business person, a fundraiser and a father, I know first-hand the care that the IWK provides. It is a vital part of our community.”
This year, funds will go towards the purchase of two new compact portable ultrasound devices for the IWK’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and Nephrology department. With their own devices, both departments will be able to integrate these ultrasound units into the daily diagnosis and treatment of patients.
“Over the last 14 years, the Kent Great Big Dig has raised more than $2.9 million for the IWK. These funds continue to make a tremendous impact on patients and their families,” says Jennifer Gillivan, President & CEO of the IWK Foundation. “The IWK is the place that the community built. That is why it’s so fitting that we look to the Atlantic Canadian construction community to help us continue to build a future of excellent care.”
Every year, the Kent Great Big Dig for the IWK demonstrates the generosity of the Atlantic Canadian construction industry by raising funds for the Health Centre during one unforgettable evening of food, entertainment, spectacular auction items and prizes. In addition to title sponsor, Kent, the Great Big Dig was supported by a multitude of organizations including platinum sponsors RCR, and media sponsor CTV.
