Maritimers pledge record-breaking $6.5 million during 34th annual IWK Telethon for Children on CTV

For Immediate Release

Halifax, N.S. – The generosity of the Maritime region has once again set a new record for the annual IWK Telethon for Children on CTV, with donors pledging an incredible $6,580,266.71 in support of the IWK. The show wrapped up for the 34th time on Sunday evening after broadcasting live from the IWK Health Centre in Halifax and remote locations in Sydney, Saint John and Charlottetown this weekend.

“We are fortunate to live in a community that puts children first. Maritimers believe that our children deserve nothing less than the best and they proved that with their amazing support of the IWK this weekend,” says Jennifer Gillivan, President & CEO, IWK Foundation. “Our organization is so grateful for all of the donors and volunteers and our broadcast partner CTV who make this event such a huge success – 34 years of Telethon is truly amazing.”

The IWK Telethon is the IWK’s largest annual fundraiser and supports the most urgent priority needs of the IWK Health Centre. This year, donors to the Telethon purchased important pieces of equipment including a new perfusion cart for the IWK’s cardiac operating room. Perfusion supplies help replace the function of the heart and lungs during a cardiac procedure. This new perfusion cart will allow these supplies to be stored inside the operating room for easy access. Approximately 100 children from across Atlantic Canada have heart surgery at the IWK each year.

“The CTV staff is incredibly proud to be part of the IWK Telethon for Children,” says Trent McGrath, Vice President and General Manager, CTV Atlantic. “We’ve been the broadcast partner now for more than 20 years and are thrilled to be able to help support this huge initiative to make sure Maritime children have the best care and the best medical equipment when they need it most.”
