“Making a difference does not have to begin on a large scale. It can start with one idea, one conversation, one event, or one person willing to show up consistently,” says Melissa Gomroki, Co-President of Dalhousie Students Supporting Sick Children (DSSSC).
DSSSC—a network of Dalhousie students passionate about supporting children who need pediatric care—has proudly partnered with the IWK Foundation by volunteering their time and talents to support events, campaigns, and initiatives that support the IWK.
Since the beginning of their volunteer partnership in April 2026, DSSSC members have contributed more than 400 volunteer hours.
Their volunteer efforts have played an essential role in a wide range of events and initiatives supporting the IWK. From taking donor calls during the IWK Telethon for Children to welcoming new donors and thanking those who give, to helping set up for various events and so much more, they consistently show up to lend a hand through the gift of time.
For DSSSC, supporting the IWK means standing alongside children and families during some of life's most challenging moments. Their willingness to show up wherever support is needed has made them an invaluable part of the IWK Foundation community.
In addition to generously volunteering their time, DSSSC has shown exceptional dedication to the IWK by leading a variety of fundraising initiatives, including bake sales, 50/50 raffles, trivia nights, silent auctions, toy drives, game nights, awareness events, and other student-led initiatives.
“DSSSC was inspired to support the IWK Foundation because the IWK is a place that children, families and communities turn to during experiences that can be overwhelming, uncertain and deeply personal," says Adèle Samson, DSSSC Co-President.
As students pursuing careers in healthcare, the DSSSC Co-Presidents say their involvement has shaped the kind of healthcare professionals they hope to become.
“Supporting the IWK Foundation has given us an experience and a sense of purpose that we could never fully put into words,” says Adèle. “We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to support an organization that has touched so many lives across the Maritimes, including our own,” adds Melissa.
DSSSC hopes its impact extends beyond fundraising by inspiring students to become lifelong community leaders and volunteers.
