Roy Chaisson Memorial Fishing Derby

What began as a way to honour the memory of Roy Chaisson has grown into a beloved community tradition that has raised more than $88,000 for the IWK.

An annual trout fishing derby, organized by Roy’s widow, Nadine Chaisson, was started following Roy’s passing from cancer in 2008. Roy loved trout fishing and spent countless hours on the water. That’s why Nadine felt there was no better way to celebrate his life and legacy than through a fishing event that reflected his passion.

“About 27 years ago, my son, Carson, was airlifted to the IWK, and they saved his life,” said Nadine. “I always did little fundraisers, but after my husband passed away, I decided to turn my fundraiser into a trout fishing derby in his memory.”

Each year, preparations begin months in advance. Nadine starts fundraising in January and spends four months leading up to the event organizing raffles, gathering donations, and coordinating volunteers. In fact, more than 70 community supporters contribute prizes, sponsorships, and support to help make the event a success.

The derby itself is an all-day affair. Before sunrise, participants gather at Goff’s Bridge, arriving as early as 4:30 a.m. to register, enjoy a breakfast sandwich and coffee, and prepare their boats for launch. Once daylight arrives, participants head out in search of the day’s biggest trout, while others cast their lines from the shoreline.

Following the regulations of trout fishing season, competitors spend the day on the water before returning for the final weigh-in at 4 p.m. After the catches are weighed and verified, raffle prizes are awarded, and trophies are presented to the first-, second-, and third-place finishers.

While fishing is the main attraction, the derby has become much more than a competition. The event has evolved into a community celebration complete with food, music, and opportunities for families and friends to come together in support of a meaningful cause. This year, Nadine’s two grandsons were among those enjoying the festivities.

For Nadine, the event’s impact extends beyond fundraising.

“Roy was an awesome, awesome man, and for my kids to be able to see all the fishermen coming out in Roy’s memory, it just makes my heart melt,” shares Nadine. “He deserves to be honoured.”

As participants gather each year, they are reminded that every ticket sold, every raffle entered, and every fish weighed supports children and families who rely on the IWK. “Some of you might not have won,” Nadine tells participants, “but you’re all winners because you’re giving back to children.”
