IWK Health is home to the only emergency department in the Maritimes that specializes in the care of infants, children and youth across Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick and is the only Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Centre east of Quebec. That’s why the redeveloped emergency department is so vital in our region. If you are faced with a situation where a child you love requires life-saving emergency care, the IWK is the place you need to be. It’s a flight, car ride, or ambulance drive away and it means that children can get the care they need right here in the Maritimes.
The IWK Foundation is privileged to work in partnership with IWK Health, the Province of Nova Scotia and our community of donors on this essential redevelopment. The IWK Foundation’s goal is to raise $26.5 million to support the purchase of specialized equipment as well as specific facility upgrades, enhancements and research.
The team at the IWK, with input and consultation from the families and communities they serve, has considered every step of the patient’s journey including reduced wait times, advancements in technology and efficiencies in care, enhanced privacy, confidentiality, infection prevention and control and even lighting, colour, sound. Creating a calmer, more comfortable environment that can inspire hope and distract from fear and pain in a child’s frightened moments is the goal of this redeveloped emergency department.
We are proud that donors will play an integral and essential role in bringing this new ED to the standard that Maritime patients and families have come to rely on and expect -- ensuring the delivery of world-class emergency care across the province and beyond.
