AJ Gillis

AJ was only hours old when his heart started to fail.

Born with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), AJ’s stomach and bowels were pushed up into his lungs and his heart was displaced.

He immediately needed a breathing tube and a ventilator to help him breathe and was rushed to the IWK’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Parents, Joe and Amy, stood nearby and watched 19 members of AJ’s care team including doctors, surgeons, nurses and many others work diligently to save his life.

Meet this strong and determined little baby.
